What LIMRI Is

London Interdisciplinary Music Research Initiative (LIMRI) aims to foster innovation and collaboration by creating a forum for interdisciplinary and cross-institutional dialogues. Innovative research is taking place across multiple institutions and departments in (and near) London; LIMRI is an opportunity to make this research more visible and foster Collaboration, Coordination, and Community across this ecosystem of music research and practice. Internal and external changes in the research landscape create challenges but also opportunities for new ways of thinking about and through music. At the first stage, we plan to hold themed research events, hosted by different institutions, to provide a space to engage with thought provoking ideas, be inspired by music, and develop new collaborations.

The idea for LIMRI began over (very affordable) soup and sandwiches at King’s earlier this year, when Oded (Kingston University London), Mark (King’s College London), Diana (Goldsmiths, University of London), and Charis (Queen Mary University of London) agreed it was time to make it happen. There had been earlier discussions between Mark and C4DM about the future of the Digital Music Research Network, and between Oded and Charis about the lack of/need for some cross-institutional infrastructure to enable collaborative and interdisciplinary work in music research and innovation. An earlier attempt in this direction can be found in the Institute of Musical Research hosted first at the School of Advanced Studies and later supported by the Music Department at Royal Holloway, University of London.
